- Founded in 18th November, 1879 by 23 members among the first graduates of Imperial College of Engineering (the predecessor of Faculty of Engineering at the University of Tokyo)
- 1901
- Became an incorporated association
- 1922
- Changed and reorganized the membership structure previously based on individual members to current organization-based membership system consisted of professional societies
- 1929
- Sponsored the World Engineering Congress in Tokyo
- 1972
- Joined the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO)
- 1979
- Celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the foundation of JFES inviting the Crown Prince and Princess
- 2015
- Hosted the World Engineering Conference and Convention (WECC2015) at Kyoto
